The Twin Forks Chapter is pleased to have been part of the LIRR 175th Anniversary celebrations during 2009.
The Chapter and its members have restored former LIRR caboose #60 to as delivered appearance. This is part of the Chapters participation in the celebration and festivities around this event.
The Twin Forks Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society was formed in 1996. Our mission is to preserve, promote and educate individuals on the past, present and future events of railroading, especially as it pertains to Long Island, N.Y.
We meet this mission in many ways. Some of the more prevalent means of doing this are:
Preserving & restoring railroad artifacts and equipment
Hosting tours of railroad related facilities
Publishing a membership newsletter
Attending railroad related shows and events
Holding informative & educational membership meetings
Our membership consists of over 50 individuals from many different age groups and states.
We meet every other month (note our coming events page for dates and times) and we publish an informative and content rich bi-monthly newsletter called The Railway Post Office.
Some of our chapter sponsored trips have been to the Wilmington and Western RR in Wilmington, Delaware, The Delaware & Ulster Railroad in upstate New York, Steamtown in Scranton, PA and most recently a tour of the New York & Atlantic Ry. Freshpond yard and the Brooklyn waterfront. All the trips are open to both chapter and NON-chapter members.
We also own six pieces of railway equipment which we are working to preserve and restore. Be sure to check out the equipment page for photos and further descriptions. In addition, the chapter also works to assist other organizations on the restoration of their equipment. Take a look at our projects page to learn more!
We also can be found at lots of area shows and events. For a list of where we'll be, go to our Coming Events page.
The Twin Forks Chapter invites you to join us. You do not need any special skills to work on the equipment, the trips are exciting and educational, the newsletter keeps the membership abreast of chapter and railroad happenings, and most importantly the membership dues are minimal.
There’s no time like the present to preserve our past for future generations to enjoy.
Join up today and help to preserve railroad history on Long Island! For information on membership please contact the chapter at TwinForksNRHS@aol.com
